Farming systems need to fit into their natural and social environment. Sometimes we describe this as a socio-ecological niche.
This amply spells out several of the arguments I make with a lot of militant Vegans (and more rarely vegetarians) when I point out that their lifestyle’s pretty damned privileged and it would NOT work for the whole world without both mass relocation (and the consequent destruction of cultures) and drastic lowering of the human population.
